The changing operator landscape

We’ve seen many changes in the operator landscape over the years – mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures (JV) and closures. While the image above doesn’t include every operator brand the UK has seen, it may remind you of some that you haven’t thought about in a while!

Britain’s first mobile phone call was made on 1 January 1985 on Vodafone’s network, a brand that we still see today. Vodafone’s competitor then was Cellnet, initially a JV between BT Group and Securicor. As a wholly BT Group owned company it became BT Cellnet, which was later sold to Telefónica and we know it as O2 today.

One2One, which became T-Mobile, was the third mobile operator in the UK and entered the market in 1993, followed by Orange a year later in 1994. After a JV saw them become everything everywhere, they are now branded EE and owned by the BT Group.

Of course, the market will continue to change as new technologies are introduced and we'll continue to lead the market in providing shared infrastructure.
