What’s in store for telecommunications masts in the UK?

With increasing demand for mobile connectivity, and 5G networks requiring a denser network of masts, it’s inevitable that the quantity of telecom infrastructure in the UK will substantially scale up. But a sea change may be underway in how exactly this is provided.

Historically, in the UK masts have been developed by individual operators for their exclusive use. In the last decade, this arrangement began moving towards some infrastructure sharing between operators in order to reduce costs, but in turn may have created some operational tensions, magnified by 5G rollout. Currently the industry is still largely dependent upon operator-funded infrastructure.

In contrast, the US has seen significant involvement of independent infrastructure companies to build and maintain masts which are then occupied by multiple operators. This approach is more cost effective and convenient for the operators, leaving them to concentrate on their core business.

As UK Plc looks to an increasingly digital future, operators will benefit from the increased involvement of independent infrastructure firms to expedite 5G rollout. With 20 years’ experience in the telecom infrastructure industry, and now with the benefit of the resources of a large group behind us, we're perfectly placed to help all operators roll out their 5G networks.
